Youth Olympic Summer Games - BMX Singapore

The Youth Olympic Games is for athletes between the ages of 14 and 18.
Singapore is the host of the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

The Youth Olympic Games aim is to bring together talented athletes aged from
14 to 18 - from around the world to participate in high-level competitions, - but
also, alongside the sports element of the event, to run educational programmes
on the Olympic values, the benefits of sports for a healthy lifestyle, - the social
values sport can deliver and the dangers of doping and of training to excess and
or of inactivity. The first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games will bring together
approximately 3,200 athletes and 800 officials in 2010.

2010 Youth Olympic Games BMX: Singapore:
* BMX Cycling was based at the Tampines Bike Track, with a new format
of team events combining BMX, cross-country, road time trial, road race.
The 128 riders where in 32 national teams of three boys and one girl, as is

Colombia has claimed the gold medal in the cycling events at the first ever
Youth Olympic Games (YOG), taking place in Singapore. -- After seven
competitions in four different cycling disciplines, Colombia claims the first
YOG cycling title in front of Italy (silver) and the Netherlands (bronze).

Colombian cyclist Jhonnatan Botero may have finished sixth in the road race

Columbian David Oquendo won the BMX event. The road racing should
be all the more interesting because David, a BMX specialist, is not
generally believed to be among the best junior road cyclists.

08/19/2010 -- Brazilian Perez Mayara Wins Girls BMX Final:

Mayara Perez, an 18-year-old from Sao Paulo, grabbed the hole shot
and beat off the challenge of Australian Kirsten Dellar and the
Netherlands Maartje Hereijgers at the girls BMX Final at Tampines
Bike Park on Thursday.

Afterward, she couldnt have been more excited: Im so happy.
I didnt think I will be the Youth Olympic champion of BMX.

I have been preparing for this tournament since March,
and I dedicate this victory to my coach, Thomas. In fact,
he is the one who made me what I am today.

There were heaps and heaps of Australians in the stands. They
were happy Kirsten took silver. But they were also ever so slightly
disappointed at the thought of how close she had come to pulling what
some of said would have been the biggest upset on the BMX circuit.

08/19/2010 -- 2010 Youth Olympic Games: Italy In The Lead After Half The Events

UCI Communication Services:
After three of the seven cycling competitions at the 2010 Youth
Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore, Italy leads the provisional
standings ahead of Colombia and Poland.

As a reminder, the YOG cycling competition is based on a team
concept. At the end of the four cycling events (mountain bike
cross-country, road time trial, BMX and road race) medals will
be awarded to the three best teams. Each team comprises three
men and one woman, all aged 17-18 years.

The cycling events got under way on August 17th with the mountain
bike cross country. Victories went to Karolina Kalasova (CZE) in the
womens race and Jhonnatan Botero (COL) in the mens competition.

After the two mountain bike events, Italy, with a fourth place in the
womens competition and second in the mens, took the provisional
lead in the teams standings ahead of Colombia and Poland.

Despite victory going to Portugal (with Rafael Ferreira Reis) in the
mens time trial yesterday, the overall standings did not change. Italy,
Colombia and Poland still lead the rankings, in that order, going into
todays BMX competitions for men and women.

After two rest days, the cycling competitions will close on August 22nd
with the Womens time trial and the Mens road race. CC - UCI News PR

* Competition Format - Cycling:

96 Junior Men and 32 Junior Women from 32 National Olympic Committees
(NOCs) will participate at the Youth Olympic Games. There are 32 teams
one team from each NOC.

Each team consists of three Junior Men and one Junior Woman. During
the confirmation of starters, riders official passports and license have to
be presented. All team members have to be present.

Each of the three Junior Men must compete in one of the three disciplines:
Mountain Bike, Time Trial and BMX (one rider from each team in each discipline).

Each Junior Woman must compete in all three disciplines.

Finally all three Junior Men in each team must compete in the Road Race.

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games format for Cycling is a combined
mixed team event, where the teams compete in each of the following disciplines:

Mountain Bike - Cross Country: After a mass start, the riders complete
a specified number of laps of the course. The first rider to cross the finish
line is declared the winner. The course is an undulating circuit designed
to produce a specific winning time, not a specific distance.

Road - Time Trial: Individual starts. Both Junior Men and Junior Women
cover a fixed distance (2-4 km). Cyclists start at given intervals. The rider
with the fastest time is the winner.

BMX: Two phases: Seedings: In order to avoid the fastest riders meeting
before the final, a separate phase is used to determine seeding (one single
rider on the track at a time). The riders time from this run is used for the
seeding. Finals: Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals are held over three runs.
The top four riders from each Quarter-Final heat (group) qualify to the Semi
-Finals. The top four riders from each Semi-Final Heat qualify to the final
which is over one run.

For each run in which he/she competes, a rider shall receive a point (score)
equal to his/her rank (finish position) in this run (race). The rider in first
place earns one point and so on down to the eighth placed rider, who will
receive eight points. The four riders with the lowest total points earned in
the runs qualify to the next stage of competition.

Road - Road Race: Mass start. The first cyclist crossing the finish line at
the end of the total distance is the winner. Lapped riders are disqualified.

* Differences between the World Championships and Youth Olympic Games:
The format used at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games is completely
new and used for the first time and is based on a team event, and not individual
event as at the UCI World Championships. The overall sum of all points earned
by all four (4) riders, is the basis of the team score for the awarding of the medals.

The upgrading works for the Tampines Bike Park (TBP) has been completed and
certified by Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the International Federation for
Cycling, as ready to host the Bicycle Moto-Cross (BMX) and Mountain Bike
competition for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Spanning over 23 hectares, the upgraded TBP is the first of its kind in
Olympic Games. It is designed such that spectators to the Singapore 2010
races will be able to have a clear view of the BMX competition as well as
watch the start and end of Time Trial and Mountain Bike events from the
spectators stand.

The bike park is made up of two cycling tracks - mountain bike trail and
BMX track. The mountain bike trail that will be competed on during Singapore
2010 spans three kilometres with four rock garden downhill trails. The track
is a test of true skills of the riders through their bike handling techniques
and endurance. Sixty percent of the trail consists of a single track, which
provides greater challenge in overtaking the opponents.

The BMX track spans 355 metres with the purpose of testing swiftness and
speed in completing the course. This dirt track consists of no less than 26
jumps and three banked corners.

The BMX track is designed and built by Tom Ritzenthaler from UCI and his
team, who also constructed the BMX track for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
when this discipline made its debut. The same team will be building a cycling
track for London 2012.

The Singapore Mountain Bike Carnival was organised on 29 and 30 May 2010
to mark the completion of the TBP. It was used to validate the operations plan
for Singapore 2010 Mountain Bike and BMX events. These Carnival events
have attracted 40 participants from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan,
Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Singapore 2010 - Blazing The Trail

Singapore will be hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from
14 to 26 August 2010. The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will receive
some 5,000 athletes and officials from the 205 National Olympic Committees
(NOCs), along with an estimated 1,200 media representatives, 20,000 local
and international volunteers, and more than 370,000 spectators.

Young athletes aged between 14 and 18 years will compete in
26 sports and take part in a Culture and Education Programme.

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games aims to inspire youth around the
world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of Excellence,
Friendship and Respect. It will create a lasting sports, culture and
education legacy for Singapore and youths from around the world, as
well as enhance and elevate the sporting culture locally and regionally.

Over the next month, as many as 10 validation events will be
held at various competition venues. The validation exercises
will further ensure they are operationally ready for the Games.

In all, the U.S. Team will consist of athletes in 17 sports: aquatics (swimming

And May Skip Shooting And Cycling Too. - It looks like the USA
will not be sending its top youth swimmers, cyclists and shooters to
next years Youth Olympic Games. - No Team USA BMX at the YOG.
This is sad news for the BMX community. -- But only time will tell.

The International Cycling Unions (UCI) first newsletter of the
2010 Youth Olympic Games is now available for consultation on

The first Youth Olympic Games, organised by the International Olympic
Committee (IOC), will be held in Singapore in August 2010. Cycling will
have three disciplines on the programme: road (road race and time trial),
mountain bike and BMX. In total, 26 sports will be represented at the Games
which will also offer the young athletes a cultural and educative programme.

The UCIs first Youth Olympic Games newsletter provides information on
the concept of participation and the qualification system, as well as the list
of qualifying events and the cycling calendar for the Youth Games.
