Moses Lake, Washington ( Gene`s BMX News ) -- 09/13/2011 Melody Johnston, the new President of the Moses Lake BMX Track sent us a message letting us know that are Gene`s BMX support of the Moses Lake BMX Track is not welcome anymore. In Quote: Youre comments regarding our 9/11 race were counter productive to promoting Moses Lake BMX and BMX as a sport. We chose not to associate with an organization that does not share the same views as us. Gene`s BMX Quotes Back: Number 01 - Gene`s BMX.com web site point of view of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist events has been about of the same content for 10 years. Not much has changed, Have a look for your self: 9-11-2001 Pages: 2011, - 2010, - 2009, - 2008, - 2007, - 2006, - 2005, - 2004, - 2003, - 2002, - 2001. In all, my September 11th, 2001 pages has nothing to do with Moses Lake BMX Track or events. Number 02 - Gene`s BMX.com is Not an organization. Gene`s BMX.com is just a personal BMX web site as one of my hobbies to help in support BMX in all on the World Wide Web. Gene`s BMX.com is one of the most comprehensive BMX related web sites of BMX Links and BMX information sources. In no way is my Gene`s BMX.com web site an organization. It is all independent and webmasterd for over 15 years by me Geneb - Gene`s BMX.com Gene`s BMX, one of the biggest Moses Lake BMX Track supporters online even before the Moses Lake BMX Track was built, and is an ABA BMX Member Racer - Not an organization. Gene`s BMX does not know what the Moses Lake BMX views are, but it looks unwelcoming. In respect of what Melody Johnston, the new President of the Moses Lake BMX Track said, "We chose not to associate with an organization that does not share the same views as us." Since the Moses Lake BMX Track has unwelcome Gene`s BMX.com, there is no point for Gene`s BMX.com to give anymore support on to the Moses Lake BMX Track. - So, We at Gene`s BMX.com will NOT be updating are Moses Lake BMX pages anymore but all the Moses Lake BMX content and information that is listed from the past, it will be left on Gene`s BMX.com for archived historical research purposes. Gene`s BMX.com web site will no longer be supporting the Moses Lake BMX Track as of this September 13th, 2011. This is somewhat sad to think this is how a person gets re-payed for all the support they have done for the Moses Lake BMX Track over the years. Sad, but Gene`s BMX.com will keep on BMXing on the world wide web but with out supporting the Moses Lake BMX Track. The Moses Lake BMX Track is a nice track for some fun Recreational BMX riding but as for its sanctioned BMX racing, It does not sound like a friendly place that I would want go to now days. Gene`s BMX wishes the Moses Lake BMX Track the best of luck, ***** Gene`s BMX ***** All Things Northwest in BMX! http://www.genesbmx.com |

Wenatchee-Moses Lake, Washington ( Gene`s BMX News ) -- 11/04/2009 It costs lots of money to drive 75 miles to the Moses Lake BMX track. A 150 Miles Round Trip from Wenatchee, Washington if you drive to all of the BMX Race events. Add that trip up about 30 times a year. And do not for get gas, the race fees and something to eat and drink and maybe even a motel cost if you spend the weekend BMX racing. It adds up fast. We have seen a good hand full of people this year saying something like this. Gene`s BMX is one of them. - We just dont have the extra money for the trip. We do miss having fun BMX Racing and shooting photos-videos for everyone. We have also seen a big hand full of youth in Wenatchee asking about the Moses Lake BMX Racing and saying that there parents can not afford the drive to and from Moses Lake all the time. This is kind of a big loss for all. There are a lot of BMX riders in the Wenatchee area some race and some dont. Just what would be the chance of getting some of them BMX riders from Wenatchee in to Moses Lake for BMX Racing and doing it cheep + saving some gas and helping the youth BMXers that dont drive to get there. Here is an ( Idea ) we came up with if someone wants to step up run with it. I wonder what could be done with the two Public Transportation Transits? * Grant County Transit Authority - http://www.gta-ride.com = Quincy-Moses Lake. * Chelan/Douglas County Link Transit - http://www.linktransit.com = Wenatchee. Both of the Transits do offer bicycle racks on the buses to get around. But the down fall is, Both - Grant County and Chelan/Douglas County Transits DO NOT LINK UP WITH EACH OTHER. - Question - WHY? We do not know why. But if people would push both of the Transits to link up with each other, like at the Douglas County/Grant County Line. IE: The Train Bridge Crossing on highway SR 28 or in the area like the Trinidad Trading Post Store. People could get to and from the BMX Race events, from Wenatchee in to Moses Lake simple & cheap by Transit bus. It would take some work from everyone to get something like this going. People would have to push and push hard to get something like this to happen. But, If something like this could be done, It would be a win for the BMX track and a big win for both Transits and everyone trying to get to Moses Lake BMX with out the big cost. This is just an idea that could work and could help out all. * Want to Comment about this? ( Click Here ) and PostReply. |

Moses Lake, Washington -- 08/09/2007 A Email From Sunshine, Hello, I wanted to let you know that our races are cancelled this weekend, August 11th and 12th. The ram mechanism would not work for gate practice on Monday. The city said they might get a chance to look at it tomorrow, but that we should just go by a rope for the gate. So the races are cancelled. Roland at the parks department said he figured this would happen because we use the gate too much. Thank you for passing the information on. -- Sunshine CC - |

Male and female riders ranged from 4 years old to 52 years old, Moses Lake BMX Organization representative Sunshine Rutherford said. The venue held 230 BMX riders and 53 motos from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and California. Motos are the different classes and divisions of people racing, she explained. Tyler Crowell, 11, Noah "No Duh" Silk, 12, Guy "The Guy" Rutherford, 12 and Beth Rutherford, 17, are advancing to the state championship races slated for September in Sumner, Wash. Racers must place at three state championship qualifying races to advance to a championship. Crowell has been racing for two years and is an intermediate rider. Silk is a novice rider and is one win away from being an intermediate rider, she said. Guy Rutherford is in his second year of racing and is the first to turn expert in the male division in Moses Lake. Beth Rutherford is in her first year of racing and reached expert riding status. The Moses Lake race venue is the biggest qualifying race in the state, Sunshine Rutherford said. Moses Lake, Washington (CBH) -- 07/09/2007 While sitting in juvenile detention for a weekend, four youth conjured an idea to keep them and others out of trouble while providing a positive activity several others are interested in. "We want to make a bike park," Mike Comerford, 14, said. Comerford and friends Cameron Comley, 14, Corey Meier, 14 and Brett Meier, 13, often find themselves in trouble because they are riding their BMX-style bikes where they shouldn't be riding. They have each received tickets, had their bikes impounded and spent time in juvenile detention for doing something they love to do. There are not a lot of places to go. They are limited to one public area to practice their sport, the dirt track at the Larson Field, they claim. They face a few problems with the dirt track, it is better designed for dirt bikes, Brett Meier said. Their bikes don't do very well in the dirt, they often find themselves stuck. The Moses Lake Skate Park, a favorite place for the group, does not allow bikes at the park. They are looking for a park similar to the skate park. After getting in trouble a few times, a police officer advised them to seek a street-style BMX park by asking the city. "But then a day later we went to 'juvy,'" Brett Meier said. The four youth drew some preliminary drawings of their dream park while in juvenile detention, Comley said. They are hoping for something about the same size as the skate park with similar equipment including pyramid shaped jumps and a bowl. A bowl looks similar to an in-ground pool. They are hoping it could be fenced in or built indoors. Although bikes are not allowed at the skate park, sometimes they are used despite the rules. Usually it does not go over well with the other patrons who are skating. It leads to fighting. Eventually they want somewhere to go to keep them out of trouble, Brett Meier said. Their ultimate goal is sponsorship. They each want to ride BMX professionally. They have been offered sponsorships in the past. For one, his passion started as soon as he got his training wheels off. Corey Meier began doing stunts at an early age, he said. Comley said he's been riding a bike since he can remember. "None of our bikes are stock, they're all upgraded," Corey Meier said. "Our bikes are made for hardcore stuff." "We can't get better at it because there's nowhere to ride," Brett Meier said. "We can't become professional because it's little stuff." The four are scheduled to meet with the Parks and Recreation Commission Wednesday July 11th at 7 p.m. to discuss the proposal. July 11, 2007 - 7:00 p.m. Park & Recreation Commission Agenda 1. Moses Lake, Washington ( Gene`s BMX News ) -- 10/30/2006 Moses Lake BMX October 28th,& 29th 2006 Photos http://www.genesbmx.com/moseslakebmx-photos.html Moses Lake BMX Moto And Rider Count. October 28, 2006 had 06 Motos 20 Riders October 29, 2006 had 06 Motos 22 Riders The 29th was a Halloween Race and was also the last scheduled bmx event for 2006 What a way to end year 2006 for Moses Lake BMX. Saturday was fun as some area youth where out on the track having alot of fun jumping and riding around the track till the BMX race event begain. A good hand full of BMX racers showed up from Idaho and had some good racing till dark. On Sunday, The BMX racing kicked off with a bit of wind blow making it somewhat hard to ride the track, But whats a good BMX race with out a a bit of wind. Some Idaho BMXers where out on the track giving it there best along with a few new riders they brought with them. Gene`s BMX was nice to let one of them new riders ( Tyler Murdoch ) use the cool Schwinn Sting BMX bike to race the Sunday event. We hope you enjoyed the ride Tyler, and we hope to see you out on the BMX track some more. At the end of the Sundays BMX race event, it looked like everyone had big smiles on there faces as the wind was realy blowing hard and everyone trying to keep the dust out of there faces. In the end, everyone was happy. Year 2006 was the first full year of ABA BMX racing for Moses Lake. We have seen some good BMX racing ACTION! out on the track, and had a hand full of new BMXers join up and race, but a low moto and rider count has also been seen this year. Hope to see more BMX riders show up in the year of 2007. If you have not been to the Moses Lake BMX Track you have been missing out. The bmx track is one of the top of the line BMX tracks in the state of Washington. It is a smooth and challenging BMX track. Stop by Moses Lake BMX if you have never been to it and check it all out. If your a BMXer, You will like it. Till next year 2007, Keep the rubber side down and ride your bike. Geneb - Gene`s BMX |

Moses Lake, Washington ( Gene`s BMX News ) -- 08/21/2006 Photos August 18th, 19th, 20th, 2006 http://www.genesbmx.com/moseslakebmx-photos.html Moses Lake BMX Moto And Rider Count. August 18th, 2006 had 02 Motos 07 Riders August 19th, 2006 had 03 Motos 11 Riders August 20th, 2006 had 08 Motos 31 Riders A small fun battle of the bikes was formed about a week before August 20th ( Schwinn -Vs.- Huffy ) with Gene`s BMX and a Idaho BMX rider. The battle of what bike was the best on the track, It was on for the August 20th event at the Moses Lake BMX Track. The battle, It started out with Gene`s BMX locking his keys in his car. No, it was not a joke to get out of the event. "butterflys" where a flying, Im just losing it in my old age I guess. Thats the first time since I was 16 that I locked the keys in a rig. Thanks eveyone for helping unlock my car. Not to say, it was HOT and Hot as hot gets at the track on August 20th making it hard for everyone to race on this day. But the hot heat could not stop a nice race in Moses Lake. Idaho had there BMX riders out in the hot heat showing the BMX off in Idaho style at Moses Lake and giving a nice show of what BMX is all about. The battle of Schwinn -Vs.- Huffy made its way in to the start gate. Schwinn did well up to the first turn, But that sneeky Huffy some how ended up making a move on that first turn and taking the lead as the Schwinn was out of shape and melting from the heat of the day on the track, the Schwinn had to be pushed in to the finish line. - So there you go Huffy takes the win! in the battle. "Someday the Schwinn will beat that Huffy", - Just Someday, it will happen.: ) In some other hot Moses Lake BMX News, Idaho brought over an A Pro BMX Rider to the Moses Lake BMX Track. ( Mike Murphy - A Pro, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho ) Murphy was ripping up the Moses Lake BMX Track with some big air. Murphy gave a kick butt BMX show to everyone on the track. Hope you enjoyed your visit at Moses Lake. We hope to see you back in Moses Lake sometime soon. And also something found at the Moses Lake BMX Track that was in some shade. It was found that there is "Internet" at the ML track as a lap-top was brought out to the track and was found to be surfing the web making it fun for all to cool down in the shade with. At the end of all the fun BMX events it is always fun to find the best happy face. Thanks Everyone for showing up to the Moses Lake BMX this weekend. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did or even more. Thats what BMX is all about = FUN!, Till next time keep the rubber side down. Geneb - Genesbmx.com |

Moses Lake, Washington ( CBH ) -- 04/25/2006 It didn't take long for racers to take to their starting positions Saturday afternoon at the Larson Recreation Center. A line of helmet-capped BMX racers charged with momentum out the starting gate, and broke through a streamer strung across the track to officially dedicate the centers BMX track with a lap around the approximately 1,200-foot-long facility. "I think it's pretty cool," racer Cody Clark said of the track, echoing the sentiment of many of his fellow teens from atop the starting gate. The track is one of the largest in the state, and sanctioned for racing from the American Bicycle Association, for which racers can accrue points as part of ABA competition. "This year the city has just come in for us and we have a beautiful facility," track operator William Rutherford said. In remarks dedicating the track, Moses Lake Mayor Ron Covey said the city has heard from racers throughout the Northwest that the new track is one of the best in the state of Washington. Rutherford told gathered participants they had been part of a long journey to get the project completed. Moses Lake Parks Superintendent Roland Gonzales added the city learned quite a bit in completing the project, and said he hoped riders enjoyed the facility for years to come. The Moses Lake BMX organization requested funding for the project in February of 2004, which has also since seen support from the 2004 Moses Lake Self Help Program, the Moses Lake Sand Scorpions, Mick Hansen, Desert Rock Excavation and the ABA. The track is operated by the city's Parks and Recreation Department. The BMX organization and Parks and Recreation Department held the facility's first race last November, but a starting gate and tower have since been added to the track, which will be part of the ABA's eastern Washington circuit. "We're excited to have a full venue this year," Rutherford said. "We're drawing people from all over the state and Idaho." Saturday's was the second race for the track this year, which held its first two weeks ago. Rutherford said the organization had hoped to race last year, but said they are ecstatic to have it open and have a full schedule this year. He cited the 33 scheduled races the track would host this year, which he called great for a first-year track. "We're just really excited to see how far we've come, and what a great facility we have now," Rutherford said. To see a complete schedule of races, go to the BMX organization's Web site at - CC - Columbia Basin Herald |

Moses Lake, Washington ( Gene`s BMX News ) -- 04/10/2006 Moses Lake BMX Saturday April 08th - 09th, 2006 Photos! http://www.genesbmx.com/moseslakebmx-photos.html A WELL JOB DONE EVERYONE! - Less do it again..... Washington state's newest BMX track, Moses Lake BMX had its first opening ABA BMX Races this past weekend of April 7th - 9th 2006. - What a weekend!, What a weekend! Moses Lake BMX Moto and Riders Count for the weekend: April 07, 2006 - had 06 Motos with 20 Riders. April 08, 2006 - had 09 Motos with 30 Riders. April 09, 2006 - had 14 Motos with 52 Riders. Gene`s BMX did not make it to the Friday April 07th, 2006 Race. but when I pulled up to the track on Saturday morning, I could see that Fridays event was something of cool as everyone had big smiles on there faces and was talking how cool it was to have BMX racing in Moses Lake. All the reports about Friday, no one could stop talking about how cool it was. On Saturday April 08th, 2006 The weather was nice and sunny when I left Wenatchee. The drive to Moses Lake was nice to, But the weather changed fast Saturday morning in Moses Lake. The rain started to fall alittle bit around registration time and we all where doing a rain stop dance and crossing are fingers that it would go away, it just keep falling and falling. But the BMX races went on. No way! that the rain could stop the Moses Lake BMX racing. Saturday was wet and raining the track was turning in to a mud pit but everyone still had big smiles on there faces and was racing and having lots of fun in the rain. Giving that the track was wet, slick and muddy, everyone seem to stay up on there bikes and raced on the track well. By the last 3 motos on Saturdays event the rain was falling hard. After the last moto, everyone was dashing to there rigs as fast as they could. The BMX track cleared out fast. On Sunday Morning April 09th, 2006 The weather was sunny and nice in Moses Lake, you could not ask for better weather for a good BMX race day than this. But giving that the rain on Saturday lasted way in to the night, it left a hand full of big mud puddles on the track. So a little stress kicked in, to race or not to race? hmmm - what do you do with mud puddles? Some shop vacs got brought out, but they where not doing the job to well, they helped abit but the clock was ticking as registration time hit, lots of BMX racers where showing up. A few holes where dug off to the side of the mud puddles and little ditches to the holes and a push broom to push the water in to the holes seem to work well with the help and support of allot of people doing this and the Moses Lake BMX track was up and racing on Sunday. Moses Lake BMX racing was fun as everyone had a blast in racing the new track. BMX riders from the Tri-Cities, Spokane, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho and the North Central Washington area took part in the first official ABA BMX races in Moses Lake over the weekend. Allot of people quoted the track as one of the best BMX tracks in Washington state. The new start gate on the track and tower next to the start gate sets the track to one of the best tracks in the state aswell. If you have not been to the Moses Lake BMX track, your missing out. At the end of Saturdays & Sundays BMX events, What the sport of BMX is all about - SMILES! :) It was nice to see some faces that I knew show up and it was nice to meet allot of news faces, The list is long, so I do not leave anyone's name out, Im going to say - you all know who you are. Moses Lake BMX - Its Next Scheduled Event Is: Saturday April 22, 2006 - Registration time - 12:00pm - 1:00pm ( RFL = Race for Life ) This is a BMX Race Event Not To Miss. and on Sunday April 23, 2006 - Registration time - 12:00pm - 1:00pm Hope to see you at the Moses Lake BMX track. - BE THERE! - Moses Lake BMX Forum. Moses Lake, Washington -- 12/01/2005 Maria Hartman ( President ) Sunshine Rutherford ( Secretary/Treasurer ) William Rutherford ( ~Track Operator~ ) The Larson Recreation Track had its first race October 12th 2005. There were many local riders there enjoying the kick-off event as well as racers who traveled from Spokane and Idaho. We were lucky enough to have the ml-bmx.com guys showing their skills on the dirt ramp. The event was a success and we'd like to thank all the businesses and volunteers who generously donated. We are in the process of scheduling races for next year, in conjunction with Walla Walla and Richland, and hoping for at least 50 races. If you need any other information please call or email one of the organizations volunteers. |

Moses Lake, Washington ( Gene`s BMX News ) -- 11/12/2005 ( Click on the photo for more photos ) Photos From The Event! by Gene`s BMX A bmx event took place on Saturday November 12th 2005 by the Moses Lake Parks and Recreation and Desert Sun cycle & sports at the bmx track at Larson Recreation Center. This was Not an ABA bmx sanctioned event, but it should have been as I have to say - wow! what a Nice BMX Event. Some 120 entries and a lot of spectators all for the bmx :) The weather was sunny and alittle cool but was just A-ok for the bmx event. The event drew people and bmx riders from North Idaho BMX and from all over the Central Washington area for some BMX action. A bmx dirt jump demonstration started off the event with some high bmx jumping moves from the riders in Moses Lake, ML-BMX.com http://www.ml-bmx.com A bmx dirt jump was put in off to the side of the bmx track for people to just jump and get air on there bmx. The dirt jump demonstration was announced by William Rutherford and the riders gave one heck of a show with big air moves. A well job done. After the dirt jump demonstration was bmx racing at the track. The Moses Lake BMX track does not have a starting gate - yet, so they made due and drew a line on the top of the starting hill to start off the races. The races where well organized and was announced by Sunshine Rutherford. The motos where set up to age of the rider just like you would see in an ABA bmx race event. A well job done. The bmx dirt jump demonstration and bmx races where fun. Everyone had smiles on there faces. The spectators packed the sides of the bmx track and dirt jump with lots of cheering support for all. The Moses Lake BMX event was a big success. I hope to see more in year 2006 from Moses Lake. The Moses Lake BMX track was built by ABA`s Billy Allen back last fall of 2004. The track has sat there for about a year now as a recreation bmx track for area youth to ride bmx on it. The track seems to have been made well and has lasted making this event on November 12th 2005 of the first event held on the Moses Lake BMX track. - Thank you Billy Allen for the well built bmx track in Moses Lake Washington. Here are some Photos from the November 12th 2005 Moses Lake BMX event, - Check them out and Enjoy! http://www.genesbmx.com/moseslakebmx-photos.html |

Yakima, Washington -- ( BMXtalk ) -- 07-20-2005 I want to thank all the riders, parents, and spectators for Columbia Basin BMX and Yakima Valley BMX successful and exciting weekend SCR's. Even the heat couldn't hinder the youngest rider who at 31/2 was blazing around the track. Also many thanks to the volunteers that made it possible. Everyone worked as a team so many thanks to all of you. Tonight the 19 th we had 2 new riders drive from moses lake to sign up and race. They are now new aba members. I gave them schedules to take to their local bike shops or to hand out to anyone interested. I also told them to check out gobmx.com and the other tracks. They are fast so maybe someday there will be some state champs from moses lake. I never hear much about their track so i asked questions. According to them there are potential riders wanting to race but no one has stepped up to run the track. it is built and waiting to be handed to someone. I can only imagine what that is like as most of us struggled to get a track built. I havent seen the track but I intend to. Mike Bull - YVBMX Yakima, Wa |

WaBMXnews -- 05/09/2005 Moses Lake, Washington? Any new news on what's up in Moses Lake? The last thing reported was an article in the Moses Lake newspaper stating that the local jumpers wanted the Billy Allen built track changed into a jumper area with half pipes and rails..... BMX as ABA members understand it has never been supported in the Moses Lake area.... BMX there means freestyle, and after using the "BMX" designation for what they wanted, getting the parks department to explore BMX and getting the ABA national track builder into town to build a "bmx track" it turns out that isn't what the locals are looking for. Interesting! |

Moses Lake, Washington ( Gene`s BMX News ) -- 04/06/2005 At a City of Moses Lake Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting on March 9th 2005 some people made a recommendation of a concrete park that would accommodate bmxers and skaters and everyone’s needs. Some comments at the meeting where made that the BMXers were upset that their new track did not have jumps, half pipes, etc., and both bikers and skaters are butting heads and making it tuff for both to co-exist. Josh Mohs, owner of the Moses Lake Skate Shop said that skateboarders are having trouble with bikers because the new BMX track does not meet the needs of freestyle bikers. So the bikers end up riding there bikes at the skate park. Mohs is pushing for a new concrete skate park to be built in the area. A parent of a skateboarder, addressed the Moses Lake commission stating that the skateboarders were appalled at the recent vandalism. ( vandalism news clip.jpg ) She also stated that the BMXers were upset that their new track did not have jumps, half pipes, etc., and that skateboarders are bullied by bikers. Commissioners suggested that the skateboarders organize and become a non-profit organization with members committed to see the project through to the end. Only time will tell if we will see a concrete park in Moses Lake that would accommodate everyone’s needs allowing skateboarders and bikers to co-exist. BMXtalk -- March 14, 2005 From what I heard regarding Moses Lake, and this is not from any official source, just hearsay, they will be hiring a Parks & Rec employee to run the show. Sounds like a dream job, for some, to be paid full-time to run a BMX track. But, they won't run full time until 2006. Maybe they already had their '05 budget allocated. If anyone one knows any different, feel free to correct me, I am just passing on the scuttlebutt. Talk to you soon, Steve Bailey - Walla Walla, WA |

Moses Lake BMX Track 2004 Report & ReviewMoses Lake, Washington ( Gene`s BMX News ) -- 10/15/2004 Gene`s BMX took a small trip over to Moses Lake on Friday the 15th of October 2004, The Gene`s BMX Official Words for this track, The BMX track, it has to be one of the best bmx tracks that has ever been built in the Central Washington area. The track is big and long. Its a bmx riders dream of a track, The reality of this bmx track, It almost looks like what we have all seen at the Great Northwest Nationals in Pasco Wa. for the last few years but with a out door twist to it. The track layout is of a letter ( M ) style but going backwards. This bmx track was well thought out, and well made. The track does need a startting gate, then it would be ready to rock n roll. The area youth love it, at least the few of them that was at the track that I saw where having a blast ridding there bikes around on the new track. ( Click on Photo for full size ) Moses Lake, Washington ( CBH ) -- 10/14/2004 ~~ Two years of work yield national-caliber facility, experts said ~~ Yet another entertainment venue is nearing completion in this city. Two thousand yards of topsoil neatly packed into jumps and turns have become the latest recreational project in Moses Lake, as a brand-new BMX bicycle track nears completion at Larson Field, next to the ice skating rink. Sunshine Fale, the BMX Track Planning Group's secretary-treasurer, could not hide her excitement about the almost -finished project, saying she could hardly wait until kids tried it out. With the soil all packed, it is only a matter of hours until the 1,000-plus-foot-long track is ready for use. All that is needed, Fale said, is a sign with rules and instructions as to how and when to use the track. After the sign is up, the track will be deemed ready. However, races sanctioned by the American Bicycle Association are not expected to arrive to Moses Lake until the spring, Fale said. Bill Allen, a track builder from the ABA said the Moses Lake project will be a national-caliber track, hosting area and state competitions, and going along with similar facilities in Walla Walla, Richland, Zillah and Yakima. Once the track is ready, landscaping work will begin, installing bleachers on the east end, as well as grass and other amenities, culminating a project that was at least two years in the making. Fale expressed thanks for the support received from private individuals and groups such as the Sand Scorpions, as well as from the City of Moses Lake, lamenting only that a lot of people around town were not aware of the planning and construction of a BMX track. "What is important now is that it is almost ready," she said. Besides the official BMX track, another freestyle track is in the works to go next to it. While the freestyle track will be open for the public all the time, the BMX track will be available for the public whenever there is not an official race going on. The benefits of having a BMX track were not lost on Fale, who said that while the track looks like a lot of fun, it will also be "a lot of exercise. "Kids will be huffing and puffing by the end of it," she said. Fale recommended that users stay away from the track when it rains hard, as the wheels may create deep grooves on the tightly packed topsoil. Any other weather, she said, riders are welcome to come. The track will be unsupervised, so every wheelie and turn is at the rider's own risk. Rules forbid the presence of spectators and motor vehicles on the track, the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and glass containers, and the addition of ramps, obstacles and other modifications. The use of protective equipment is strongly encouraged, such as helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and shin guards. The track will be open every day from 8 a.m. to sunset. The project is being financed with self-help money from the city on a ratio of 3-1. This means that whatever amount the city puts in,the project has to show a 3-to-1 value, $3 worth for every $1 the city put in, said Roland Gonzales, park superintendent for the city. The city chipped in about $13,000. Adding the $39,000 of the 3-1 ratio brings the total added project value to about $52,000. Gonzales said that the city owns the property the track is on, and it will be in charge of its maintenance in the future. "We will support (the BMX group) to make sure they can hold races safely," he said, calling the long-awaited completion of the track "a long process. "We had several meetings," he said. "The BMX group was in contact with the ABA, and since it was on city property, we had to monitor and assist." The working, and the planning, are not done, as the BMX track group have an option to require more money for 2005, Gonzales said, although he said that is not the parks department's first priority right now. "Our first concern is having a safe track," he said. |

WaBMXnews -- 08/16/2004 This past week I was contacted by a person representing the Moses Lake Parks and Rec. Department... Some one from the department has contacted me at least twice in the past, with questions about how to set up a bmx track, how to build a bmx track, how to get donations to build a bmx track, how to manage a bmx track and whatever else crossed their mind at the time... This inquiry was the same ol'; same ol'; same ol' stuff with a twist... The person that the park department had contact me wasn't available when I called back, she had left the department to return to college, in mid-August... The person answering the phone knew about the contact attempt with me and knew it was about bmx, and asked if I had anything to say... I explained that I didn't have a speech ready, but was responding to the call asking me to discuss issues of interest to the Moses Lake Parks and Recreation Department... She then said that the person in the department handling the bmx track development was a fellow named Rolando Gonzalez... The office phone number is 509-766-9240 I told the person that answered the park department number that I had been contacted before, twice over the last ten year about bmx coming to Moses Lake and I was then and now willing to help in any way I could... I also told her that Moses Lake was set to host the Washington State BMX Championship race the year Mount St. Helens went off, on a track that wasn't built and never got built... Her response was a big "OH, REALLY"; she didn't know that... I also told her that Moses Lake Parks Department has talked about bmx since before St Helens blew and has never built a track... And I asked why that is... She didn't know, this was her first contact with the issue and she was sure Mr. Gonzalez intended to build a facility for the kids and has $13,000 allocated for the project... She assured me Mr. Gonzalez would be contacting me the next day.... A week later, no contact yet..... Moses Lake and Kent share a common political behavior in their parks departments... Over the years I have watched as groups of parents with kids that want a bmx track in their local park have approached their local parks department... The group is told to attend meetings and make proposals, the group usually does this with enthusiasm; and the parks officials respond with verbal support and more meetings to develop ideas, collect information, and try to determine the best way to go about building the requested facility... Some one always asks about insurance; and some one in the group is charged with the responsibility of finding out about what the sanctioning bodies of bmx offer... By the time you reach this point, you have attended meetings for several weeks, or months, or years, and have repeated several of the steps so as different officials at different levels of the parks or city can have first hand information about the project... The information gathered last week, last month, or last year needs to be re-investigated so as to confirm it is still accurate for the new guy that just got involved... More meetings are held, the kids are no longer there, the parents have dwindled in number and the parks people eventually conclude that there really wasn't any long term interest in the project, it was just a hot topic with a small group that has disappeared and the project is dropped... This practice is a tactic that is used by all political entities when approached with requests, and or projects... Moses Lake and Kent have repeatedly done this over the last twenty-five or so years... When the insurance issue is brought up and they don't ask their own Risk Management people to check it out, they aren't interested in building anything... If there was genuine interest on their part they would simply ask for the phone numbers for their Rick Management Officer to contact, and their person would understand exactly what the sanctioning body had for insurance and could explain it in detail to the Parks guys, or the council members... Think about it, why would a governmental entity, with a Risk Management Officer or Office Staff ask you to find out about available insurance and explain it to them....? It is a delay tactic, another stalling step intended on waiting you out, tiring you out so as you will lose interest and go away... If they are really interested in moving forward with the project, they will immediately want their Risk Management people involved in everything involving insurance... Kent and Moses Lake have been champions at this smile, say yes, hold meetings, determine the best solution, ask about insurance, determine the best property available, and watch while the group drops in size and goes away... And bmx'ers everywhere will go away eventually, sooner more so than later..... Kids want to see action, and when it doesn't come they move on, and then the parents move on also... Most bmx'ers don't, or won't make time to participate in the organizing, gathering information, planning, and building process;nearly all feel it's not their job to build the tracks, and it takes too much time... |

The Larson Recreation Center hopes to have its newest addition, a BMX track open and ready by early summer of 2004 Moses Lake, Washington -- 02/17/2004 By Sebastian Moraga Herald ( CBH ) ~~ Facility expected to be on the go by early summer~~ Things are right on track for what is expected to be the newest addition to the Larson Recreation Center. A BMX bicycle track, the dream of a group of local citizens for a number of years is close to becoming a reality thanks to the approval of monies by the Moses Lake city council. "We hope to be ready to go by early summer," said Ralph Gonzalez from the Moses Lake Parks and Recreation Commission and who has acted as a liaison between the entity and a local non-profit group called the BMX Track Organization. The track, Gonzalez said, will be located at the east end of the Larson Recreation Center, next to the ice skating rink, and it will comply with all the minimum requirements of the ABA, such as an 8-rider starting grid, and will be available, between the ABA circuit and the public usage, almost year-round. "We will be open for as long as there is daylight," Gonzalez predicted. "Depends on whether it's a typical or an atypical winter. On atypical winters, we will be open nine months. On typical Moses Lake winters, we might be open for 11." The BMX Track Organization, with close ties to the American Bicycle Association is developing a bike track Gonzalez estimates will have a value of about $45,000, but that thanks to donations the actual cost is not expected to go higher than $13,000, money which will be provided by the city. Among the donations, Gonzalez highlighted the fact that all the dirt for the 1000-foot-long track will be provided by a local excavation business. This, Gonzalez said, is in tune with the cost-conscious attitude he said the BMX Track Organization has regarding the city's financial shape. "We know the city is (monetarily) strapped," he said. "So we will install things like grass, bleachers, and lights later on." Nonetheless, he said the city still "needed to move forward" in the area of parks and recreation and provide enjoyment for children and adults. "We recognize that the city is strapped but we can't say 'we are not going to do this because the city laid off a fireman or a policeman.' This is going to be for the community when people are out of work." He added, "We can't stop trying to improve the quality of life of people in Moses Lake." Gonzalez said he did not expect the venue to be a huge cash cow for the city, though he did expect it to be popular. "It will not be a white elephant," he said. "It's in a great location, right by the Interstate 90 corridor, and it will be a good option during baseball tourneys at Larson (Ballfields) and for people who may not have enough to do with the aquatic center." Monetarily, Gonzalez said riders who participate in ABA competitions will have to pay the BMX Track Organization, which in turn will have to pay the ABA itself. "There will be no fees levied on the public to watch or to use the facility," he said. Though the construction of the track took a big step forward with city council pledging their support during the last city council meeting, Gonzalez said the length of time that took to get to this point has taken a toll on the group's membership rolls. "We have been working on this since 2002," he said. "We have had people lose heart and interest in the project, so we are looking for volunteers. We need them." Their next meeting is this Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Godfather's Pizza. Until then, Gonzalez can't hide his enthusiasm. "BMX will prepare the track and it will require minimal maintenance from us. The people from ABA are sending somebody over to help us build it." Gonzalez said he was surprised to find similar levels of enthusiasm at City Hall last Tuesday. "They were not asking whether it was going to work, but how it was going to work once we build it," Gonzalez said. "They know it's a good thing." City council is not the only group Gonzalez credits with their support. "If it was not for the Tourism Commission and the Parks and Recreation commission, we would have never reached city council." ~~ A E-mail in the box from Ralph Gonzalez ~~ There will be meeting tonight with the City Council at 7:00 p.m. for final approval of the BMX track. The track will be located next to the Larson Batting cages. We will have the draw of the baseball field, batting cages, ice skating rink and we will be easy to find off the I-90 corridor. The track will be 1000' feet of turns, jumps and bumps that will be thrilling for all ages. It will become ABA sanctioned, we have been in contact with Walla Walla, Yakima and Tri-Cities and of course ABA officials. I'm not a biker, so I can't jazz it up in details. My position in this project was to organize the design team and acquire approval from the Tourism Commissioners, Parks and Rec. Commissioners and City Council. I plan on staying involved, but will fall back from a leader role and let the BMX group drive this once we have approval tonight. I appreciate your time and effort in helping us.. - Ralph ( Added Web Notes ) MOSES LAKE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION Coppyed From - http://www.ci.moses-lake.wa.us/agenda_archive.asp COUNCIL CHAMBERS February 11, 2004 Meeting 7:00 P.M. Trail Planning Team's charette a success story, though the work is just starting. The Trail Planning Team's charette is history, and the TPT is now readier than ever to look into the future. The three-day retreat was put together by the TPT branch of the Healthy Communities Project in order to come up with an organized plan for a coordinated path and trails system for the city. And now, after a year of planning and three days of brain storming, that plan set, and the charette's participants are raving. Paul Burke and the BBCC's Shelley Glendenning from the blue team pointed out the possibility of including a BMX bicycle track ( More ) |

WaBMXnews -- 08/19/2003 Moses Lake's bmx project has reportedly slowed a bit. Moses Lake has been putting in a bmx track since before Mount St. Helens blew, and in fact a state championship race was set for Moses Lake the year Mt. St. Helens blew. That event was cancelled due to the heavy ash layer that covered the hoped for bmx track area that year. Since then Moses Lake has been going to open a bmx track every few years, and it still is going to open a bmx track........ |

~Moses Lake City manager Joe Gavinsk to City Council~ Moses Lake, Washington ( CBH ) -- 06/11/2003 Moses Lake council members unanimously voted to approve the concept of a new BMX and Freestyle bicycle track. However, the lack of a non-profit organization license, Tracy noted, makes it impossible for the city to fund the construction of equipment for the track. "We can't get to that point until you have an organization we can deal with," he told the group in charge of the BMX project. Council member Brent Reese said he agreed with Tracy. "I am all for the project," he said, "But you need to become more organized." Pearce then asked Ralph Gonzalez, one of the members of the group, if it was possible to set aside the $4,000 needed for equipment out of the 2004 budget, as opposed to the 2003 funds. Gonzalez replied that the possibility had been discussed with the American Bicycle Association and the entity had approved the idea. After the meeting, Gonzalez said he was "very excited with the support of the council." Regarding the city's request that they form an organization, Gonzalez said that what the city was asking for was "very logical." Jon Lane, chairman of the Parks and Recreation commission said the city's request was simply to form a legal entity so that there is someone officially requesting the money. He added that putting together such an institution "shouldn't take long at all." Construction of the track, Gonzalez said, is scheduled to begin in late August. He touted the facility as "a safe place to keep our kids busy during the summer." |

The Parks Commissioners Likes Idea, Wants Groups To Come Back With More Information Moses Lake, Washington ( CBH ) -- 12/12/2002 Luke Stansbury travels to Wenatchee and the Tri-Cities with his bike to take a spin on their BMX tracks, but he doesn't want to. He'd prefer, instead, to go to a track here in Moses Lake. And, as he told the Moses Lake Parks and Recreation Commission Wednesday night, he thinks others will come as well. "You'll wind up seeing a lot of people from out of town come in and race. People will travel to go race," Stansbury, who is 17 and a member of the American Bicycle Association., said. Stansbury, along with a group of mostly students and some parents, came before the commission with a model of what the dirt tracks could look like and a request for help with planning and funding. Commissioners and students also watched a short video of a BMX race on a dirt track, where about 20 riders race through the dirt and fly through the air as they hit the dirt mounds. Another group of students also came before the commission, only these youngsters requested a track made of concrete and jumps similar to the skate park. The commission voted to direct parks and rec staff to work with both groups and come back with recommendations as to where the facility should be placed and how much it would cost. "We need to get a more formalized commitment from the bikers," Commission Chair Jon Lane said. Jerry Thaut, director of the parks department, said he's had four or five different groups of people approach he and commissioners in recent weeks. He compared this effort to that which started the ball rolling for the skate park nine years ago. That project was started when a groups of youths made a presentation before the parks commission, then the City Council, to acquire funding to build the park, which is now across the street from Frontier Middle School. The skate park cost the city $60,000, then $50,000 of new equipment was later installed. "It gets used," Thaut said. "Facilities like that are a deterrent for negative behavior." Cody Isaacson, who spoke in favor of the concrete track, said he has had received a citation from police for riding his bike in the skate park. And Stansbury said he's been chased off a few businesses' properties for riding on the sidewalk or in parking lots. So has Tony Burnett, who is also a member of the American Bicycle Association, and he believes this project will benefit adults as well as children. "It would bring in a lot of business," he said. The skate park does not allow bikers because the equipment was made safe only for skateboarders, Lane said. Commissioners were curious how popular the sport is, and how much the track would be used. Stansbury said he started racing when he was 14 and a friend introduced him to it, and he's only seen it grow since. "I could see it (the track) being used every day, year-round," he said. The only maintenance required for the track would be keeping it watered down, Stansbury said. Hilda Grant, who was reading comments she received by telephone from absent commissioner Mike O'Neill, said one group should be formed to find someone to supply the materials, then the city should supply the land. Thaut said the commission and parks department should take some leadership in the endeavor by helping the interested parties with some of the legwork involved. Commissioner Ralph Gonzalez agreed and said he would volunteer personally to help get the project off the ground. "There's a great idea out there, and it's really important we come together at the get-go," he said. |
